At Body Energetics, we start with the individual and their needs—from gaining core strength to maintaining flexibility to improved wellness. We offer all levels of instruction in Authentic Pilates, GYROTONIC®, and Yoga. A “can do” spirit fills the studio. As do the relationships.
Massage therapy and personalized programs complement our classes. We prize self-care.
Pilates focuses on the “powerhouse” (or “core”) muscles of the body: the abdomen, the lower back and the buttocks/thigh muscles. Exercises are performed on specially designed apparatus or on a mat. Originally devised for rehabilitating injured soldiers, the exercises are beneficial to people of all ages and physical abilities, from elite athletes to seniors.
Reformer options include private or duo. Tower is offered in small groups.
Pilates is designed to give you suppleness, natural grace, and skill that will be unmistakably reflected in the way that you walk, in the way you play and in the way you work. – J.H. Pilates (1883-1967)
Yoga dates back to ancient India, where its practice was mental and spiritual as well as physical. It wasn’t until the 1980s that yoga took hold in the Western world. Some types of yoga are about relaxation. In others, you move more. Most focus on learning poses, called asanas, and breathing.
At Body Energetics, we teach Hatha and Vinyasa style yoga. We are starting a new class that combines Vinyasa with Pilates. “Yoga Fusion” or “Yogalates” provides intense targeted resistance exercises followed by controlled stretching, addressing all major muscle groups at once.
Yoga does not just change the way we see things, it transforms the person who sees. - B.K.S Iyengar (1918-2014)
Developed by Hungarian dancer Juliu Horvath, THE GYROTONIC METHOD® draws from yoga, ballet, tai chi and swimming. Using a system of weights, pulleys and a rotating handle unit—called the Gyrotonic Pulley Tower —you will execute exercises that simulate natural movements of the spine—arching, curling, and spiraling. The Jumping Stretching Board adds full body exercises performed in a variety of body positions—kneeling, standing, lying and sitting.
Like Pilates, GYROTONIC® is suitable for people of all physical abilities. Instruction is private.
The ultimate aim is to be home in one’s body...to be at one with nature of oneself, and to experience exercise as a creative and delightful experience. – Juliu Horvath
Therapeutic massage offers health benefits in addition to relaxation. Both the client and practitioner have a shared goal of achieving structural changes within the body—with the client identifying what needs attention—generally through a series of regular massages.
At Body Energetics, we provide in-home massage, as well as massage at our studio. We offer Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, and Cupping Therapy.
Massage rates: 60 minutes/ $65; 90 minutes/ $95. (In-home rates vary.) * Gift certificates available.
The ideal exercise and wellness programs are personalized, taking close account of the individual’s needs, age, fitness level and challenges. This can take many forms. For almost a decade, for example, we have provided in-home Pilates instruction to a couple, now in their nineties, adapting the exercises and the intensity to their changing physical circumstances. We have clients with special issues, like balance, flexibility, or posture. In each instance, we figure out together an exercise program that makes sense for that individual, even if it involves just a few sessions
Like many professionals in the health and fitness industry, I am driven each day by an intense desire to share with others the incredible benefits of living a healthier lifestyle.
I have been involved in the fitness industry for over 25 years. I started as a personal trainer, instructing clients on free weights and fitness machines. Though my clients’ bodies improved—yes, their muscles grew bigger and stronger—I knew there was something more.
In 2000, I learned about an exercise method called “Pilates,” created by Joseph Pilates. It changed my life. I trained under Joseph Pilates’ protégé and chosen successor, Romana Krysanowska, and her daughter, Sari Mejia Santo—and proudly(!) earned a Pilates Graduate Certificate signed by Kryzanowska.
I soon opened a Pilates studio here in Rhode Island. My clients and I flourished. Still, I longed for more. I had watched a colleague, Cassy Dasilva, move through a sequence of exercises—arching, curling, and spiraling her spine—on an amazingly-designed, hand-crafted wooden machine called The Gyrotonic Pulley Tower. I was mesmerized.
In 2006, I obtained my GYROTONIC® certification. “Gyro” was a perfect complement to Pilates.
In the years since, my passion for uniting the body and mind has only deepened. I have gained certification as a holistic health coach, a licensed massage therapist, and a yoga instructor. Nourishing the connections between fitness, healthy eating and lifestyle has become my true center.
Physical fitness and wellness is a life process. It’s not a New Year’s resolution. It’s a continuous evolution of your desire to find new energy and new spirit within yourself.
I feel blessed to earn my living doing what I love most, meeting great people, sharing their goals and watching them grow. The relationships have been lasting.
I look forward to meeting you soon!

What People Are Saying
“I feel stronger and more flexible.”
After years of back pain from a spinal injury, I found Susan and discovered Pilates. It has changed my life! Not only did my constant pain disappear but I feel stronger and more flexible in ways that traditional weight lifting never offered. Both Susan and these workouts have become a fixture of my weekly routine and I take notice of my body and movements as I never had before. Thank you Susan! – Chris, 36
“The answer to every dancer’s prayers.”
As a former dancer trained in many genres of dance, the “what to do after college” was a great challenge for me. I longed to find something to help me condition and feel like “me” again. Gyrotonic was exactly what I needed. How I wish I had known about it while I was dancing! I’ve since added Pilates reformer and tower classes and I’m now addicted. If you want to be a powerhouse dancer, head to Susan Anthony. She is a consummate professional, the answer to your out-of-shape prayers. - Maura, 30
“Professionalism . . . precision . . .”
I'm writing to congratulate and thank Susan Anthony for the professionalism she has consistently shown my wife and me over the past 8 years during our three per week Pilates hours. Susan is a professional and quietly but firmly insists on the precision that Pilates demands. As octogenarians, we have been able to continue vigorous exercise sessions and look forward to working with Susan for the foreseeable future. – Norman, 89
“Increased strength, toning and flexibility . . .”
Five years ago at age 63, I started taking Susan's Pilates classes. The benefits of increased strength, toning and flexibility still continue to amaze me. I believe so much of this is because not of only Susan's classical training in authentic Pilates, but because she individualizes her teaching to ensure we all receive he maximum results. I know I speak for others too, when I say we respect her so much! She's just the best! – Mary, 68
Pricing and Class Information
Classes at Body Energetics are either taught in private, duo, or small groups so that every student receives individual attention and learns proper form and technique with each exercise.
Reformer: This comprehensive, traditional Pilates class is designed to provide maximum benefits in the fastest amount of time, strengthening, lengthening and ultimately reshaping your body. It can be taken one-on-one or in a semi-private class. Private sessions are highly recommended for the new student.
Reformer Plus: These fun and energetic beginner/intermediate level duo classes provide a challenging "circuit training" workout in which the reformer, mat, and tower are used.. The focus is on flow as well as precision of movement between exercises. Private sessions are a prerequisite.
The Tower: Discover a deeper connection to your core! This small group class enhances your Pilates training through a combination of mat work and the use of a spring resistance apparatus (called the Tower). You will stretch your muscles while strengthening and toning your arms, legs, buttocks and abs. This class is not recommended for individuals with severe injury or pain. Private sessions are a prerequisite.
GYROTONIC®: You’ll work one-on-one, utilizing the pulley-tower and/or jumping-stretching board, moving your body in various arching, curling, spiraling and circling ways that open up energy channels, increase flexibility and create balanced strength.
Yoga Fusion: Whether you've done yoga for a long time or are a gym-goer looking to refresh your usual workout, yoga fusion is a great place to start. By melding yoga with Pilates, you can target all the major muscle groups while also gaining the stress-busting and mindfulness for which yoga is known.
